Social determinants of health are non-medical elements that affect an individual’s health status. In a broad sense, social determinants commonly refer to the financial situation, environmental conditions, access to quality education and healthcare services and centers, and social inclusion. Apart from these factors, other political structures and policies can also be considered as social determinants of health. In recent years, the impact of the social determinants of health has been widely recognized as the primary cause of several chronic diseases and health conditions, especially cardiovascular disease. Cardiovascular disease accounts for 17.3 million deaths globally each year and this figure is expected to grow year by year (Shins, Basheer, & A.D., 2017).
In western countries, cardiovascular disease is reported to be the main cause of death and the source of other incapacitating ailments. In Europe, the mortality rate of cardiovascular disease is substantially high in low-income countries as opposed to high-income countries. Similarly, in the United States, an alarming number of people die from cardiovascular disease caused by a lack of access to quality healthcare. These health disparities and inequities that stem from socioeconomic conditions play a significant role in the management of cardiovascular diseases including prevention, treatment, and access to care (Roger, 2020).
