The characteristics I find critical in a nurse preceptor include strong communication skills, enthusiasm when teaching new nurses, a high level of experience and expertise in clinical care, and a caring attitude. Strong communication skills enable a positive relationship where the new nurses can inquire and get answers when they are stuck. Enthusiasm within a preceptor creates a conducive environment for the new nurses to practice in a learning environment rather than a bullying environment. A caring attitude in a preceptor promotes humanity.
