American Nurses Association (ANA) recognizes the use of Standardized Nursing Terminologies (SNTs) as a basic fundamental requirement in nursing practice especially in this era when advancements in technology continue to revolutionize how medical information is collected, stored and analyzed for purposes of enhancing quality care CITATION ANA18 \l 1033 (ANA, 2018). The introduction of Electronic Health Records (EHRs) as means of managing patients’ information has further necessitated the use of SNTs for purposes of enhancing communication between nurses and other healthcare personnel such as doctors CITATION Tam17 \l 1033 (Macieira, et al., 2017). Nursing informatics has gained momentum as a specialty in the nursing profession thus fueling the need to integrate the science patient care to that of information and communication technology CITATION DMc17 \l 1033 (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2017). This paper will outline the benefits as well as the challenges associated with the use SNTs and how some of the challenges can be mitigated to ensure that quality care is promoted within the nursing profession.
