Introduction
COVID-19 is a highly infectious respiratory disease that results from contact with the novel coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Infections were first observed in Wuhan, China in December 2019, after which the virus quickly spread across the world. Typical symptoms are fever, sore throats, headaches, muscle and joint pain, fatigue, and chills (World Health Organization, 2020). The disease is airborne and the SARS-CoV-2 can remain viable on surfaces for as long as nine days (Tsui, Deng, & Pan, 2020). The transmission mode of the virus necessitates social distancing, wearing masks, and proper hygiene to reduce its spread.
COVID-19 symptoms can present as mild, severe, or critical. Most people with a mild form recover within two weeks of treatment. Patients with severe cases may exhibit dyspnea and lung infiltrates higher than 50% of the lung field in the first 48 hours (WHO, 2020). Patients suffering from critical COVID-19 may develop respiratory failure, organ failure, or septic shock. No cure is available for COVID-19 yet. However, treatment to manage the symptoms of the infection include antiviral treatment and monoclonal antibodies (Jiang, Zhang, Yang, Hotez, & Du, 2020; Patel, Nori & Stevens, 2020). These drugs are administered in severe cases via intravenous infusion. The WHO recommends home-based self-care for mild and asymptomatic cases. According to the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases (2021), Pfizer and Moderna developed two viable COVID-19 vaccines. Three other pharmaceutical companies, namely Astrazeneca, Janssens and Novavax, have COVID-19 vaccines that are in phase 3 clinical trials. Both approved vaccines produce COVID-19 immunity because body cells react to the vaccine by producing a protein that protects against the virus.
