Learning About Sociological Imagination
Beginning the discussion of sociological imagination by considering suicide is not a downer topic to start the course or a textbook. Suicide is an important topic to aid in learning about sociological imagination. The sociological imagination allows individuals to think themselves way from familiar routines of their daily lives by looking at such routines with fresh and critical eyes. Additionally, the sociological perspective is vital in helping one place their personal troubles into a larger social context. According to Abrutyn & Mueller (2018), linking suicide with public issues is essential in recognizing its cause. Suicide exists as a sociological phenomenon rather than an individual fact or reality. Additionally, taking personal problems and linking them to public issues is vital in focusing on the social issues causing the specific personal problems rather than blaming the individuals who commit suicide or create their individual problems. Combating suicide requires the analysis of an individual at a micro or macro level which is in line with the sociological imagination.
