Stress at Work Can Lead to Dissatisfaction
Stress is an emotional, mental and physical strain through its physical and physiological effects on an individual. Stress at work occurs when a job’s demand exceeds a person’s coping ability (Odle-Dusseau et al., 2018). In such a case, a worker or an employee perceives a specific situation to be too strenuous to handle. In addition, stress threatens an employee’s well-being. Even though stress occurs at work there are numerous debates about the primary cause of stress at work including working conditions and worker characteristics. The various viewpoints further define the various ways of preventing stress at the workplace. Worker characteristics including coping skills and personality are relevant in defining whether particular job conditions can lead to stress at work. The causes of stress are varying among different people. Stress at work can lead to dissatisfaction, aggression, concentration problems and anxiety which negatively affects work performance. In addition, stress at work is also associated with particular biological reactions which can lead to poor healthcare including cardiovascular disease. Stress at work can be due to task demands where workers and employees fail to understand specific tasks and activities about their jobs and where the job will lead them. Task demands create time pressures, a feeling of lack of control and other concerns about career progress and growth.
In addition, role demands that occurs when an employee is exposed to difficult and inconsistent expectations due to role conflict at work. Employees further face stress at work when their ethics are challenged due to the different roles and job descriptions. Ambiguity at work creates confusion since there is numerous confusions on the job roles and expectations of others. Stress at work can also be caused by offensive co-workers, poor leadership and sexual harassment. Jobs are physically demanding when working in tight schedules and other extreme conditions that demand a lot from individual employees and workers. Pressure at work can be within or outside the workplace depending on various interactions by the employees. Over the recent years there has been an increase in company layoffs as they respond to various economic conditions which has led to increased stress levels among the employees (Mansour and Mohanna, 2018). Technological advancements have led to efficiency and effectiveness on organizations creating greater competition and higher expectations for human resources thus creating more stress on employees. Globalization has further led to global competition which has resulted to more competition and considerable changes in the business environment. Additionally, there has been a considerable increase in working hours among employees. Work-related stress is a major concern for employees and employers as it significantly reduces work productivity. Since various working conditions lead to job stress it is critical for organizations and employers to redesign jobs and working conditions as a prevention strategy.
