Purpose statement
This policy symbolizes the policy of Mater Health Organization with regard nursing information best practices that are aimed at safeguarding patient information (Matney et al., 2011). The purposes of this policy are: to help improve the security of patient information to ensure that it is not accessible by wrong people; to maintain patient safety and patient confidentiality through protecting their information; and to encourage effective and safe use of patient data in offering health services to patients.
Best practices definitions and descriptions
Secure practices
Secure practices can be defined as the techniques or methodologies that provide reliable security to patient information. Some of the secure practices to be used in secure patient data include monitoring applications with access to data, creating specific access controls, and maintaining security patches (Chang, Poynton, Gassert & Staggers, 2011). Monitoring applications with access to data involves putting up firewalls around data in order to protect it. This prevents people from accessing it from an outside source. Creating specific access controls involves developing distinct keys for each individual that has access to data. This helps in restricting the access by an individual to only the information they need. Lastly, maintaining security patches involves installing systems which prevent easy access to data by unauthorized individuals.

Data security is defined as the protective digital privacy measures which are used to prevent unauthorized access to data.
