Understanding the nursing profession requires us to appreciate the nurse’s philosophical position. This position includes paradigms as well as theories, which echo a nurse’s values and his important impact over nursing career. There are four major meta-paradigms within the nursing profession: person, environment, health and nursing. Each has exceptional tenets, and adds to the career and discipline of nursing in a unique way. Each meta-paradigm plays an important duty in the nursing practice and is crucial when providing care to patients. Apart from the four main meta-paradigms, pragmatism is a significant philosophical thought (Bender, 2018). Pragmatism advances the debate about the greatest approach to take in nursing exercise. The objective of this work is to describe the main nursing meta-paradigms, elaborate the definition of terms and demonstrate the connection between nursing meta-paradigms and nursing theory, and the contributions of paradigms and pragmatism to nursing practice. Our goal is to observe these perspectives in a greater aspect, use the basis of these philosophers to form our own definition of the four nursing meta-paradigms, and use them in real-life situation in order to prove their significance and position in the current-day patient care practices.
Definition of Terms
This discussion revolves around the following terms:
1 Meta-paradigm: a conceptual context that establishes the interconnected manner of nursing, human being (patient), health and environment.
2 Human being: the patient who is receiving the care. It covers individual’s spirituality, family and friends, culture, as well as the socio-economical variables (Bender, 2018). A person should promote the practice of satisfying human needs by offering human care.
