Another chilly morning is here! It is in the spring season and as I trod in the mud an unusual feeling arrest my emotions. What has captured my glare this time is the drenched flowers that surround my grandmother’s cemetery. My mother who saw me trembling came running held me tightly between her fists, lifted me and whispered “My son: take heart, it is the second anniversary of your grandmother.”
I was working as a psychiatric nurse when my grandmother was diagnosed with breast cancer. Despite numerous efforts by oncologists to save her life, the treatment was futile since the diagnosis came too late. I stomped in the mud and became mad as my mother tried to give me words of encouragement with grief in her eyes. I was perplexed with a series of endless questions. Why did the doctors not diagnose cancer early enough? Why did they not employ chemotherapy and hormone therapy at the right time before the disease surprised her immune system? My mother had no answers to these questions but only accepted my blame for the oncologists who couldn’t diagnose the tumor in time to save the precious life of my grandmother.
