Personal Nursing Philosophy
Nursing is one of the medical professions that is growing and gaining momentum considering that it touches on significant aspects that affect patients’ life. Nurses as professionals are trained to care for patients and ensure that the care environment is safe and appealing. Also, they need to ensure that the needs of the patients are incorporated in the care plans to avoid cases of resistance to medications by their clients. My philosophy is grounded on holistic and compassionate care which forms the prerequisites for good interpersonal relationships between the nurses and patients.
Nursing Philosophy Concepts
Nurses must have a well-informed philosophy that guides their practice. To me, nursing entails provisions of holistic care in a compassionate environment that makes the patients feel valued and cared for in the care settings. I also believe that nurses should advocate for the needs of the patients besides offering medical care. My philosophy has three major concepts. The first is holistic care which involves the provision of medical support aligned with the patients’’ physical, emotional, spiritual and psychological needs (Nikfarid et al., 2018). The next concept is compassion which involves exhibiting a high sense of love and unconditional support to the patients to facilitate the timely realization of wellness. The last aspect is advocacy which entails fighting for the needs of the patients. Nurse advocates should ensure that patients’ medical costs are fair and that they receive timely treatment when visiting healthcare facilities.
Metaparadigms of Nursing and How They Apply in My Practice Area
They are four major nursing metaparadigms. The first is the person component which I view as the people receiving the nursing care. In my practice area, they are patients that receive direct care and the caregivers such as the family members that take care of the sick in home settings. The nurses ensure they provide compassionate care to the patients while also empowering the family members on the best strategies of caring for their ailing loved ones. The approach does not only foster disease management but also empowers the family members on the best self-care strategies they should adopt in the absence of healthcare professionals.
The second aspect is the nursing component viewed as the delivery of optimal care to meet the holistic needs of the patients (Nikfarid et al., 2018). The nurses determine the wellness of the patients and are therefore expected to establish their health needs before embarking on the care process. In my practice area, it is considered companionate care that involves medical, emotional and physical support to the patients. Nurses are thus advised to ensure that all these needs are provided.
The third metaparadigm is the health element that I view as the realization of wellness. Realizing wellness does not only imply the eradication of diseases in patients’ body, but also ensuring that their social, psychological and physical states are stable. In my practice area, health is viewed as all-around wellness (Nikfarid et al., 2018). Nurses are expected to ensure they provide the physical, emotional, psychological and social needs of the patients.
The last aspect is an environment which I view as the care setting from which care is delivered. It should thus be safe and with compassionate care to foster positive relationships between the nurses and patients (Lindahl, 2018). In my practice area, the environment is made safe by ensuring cleanliness and high levels of hygiene. Also, safety is enhanced by ensuring that the patients with mobility challenges are supported to prevent falls, with the floors to all rooms made less slippery. The modifications and support are aimed at ensuring that the caring environment is hospitable to the patients.
Application of My Philosophy
My philosophy could be applied to three practice areas. The first is on the present nursing practice. Nurses are required to be compassionate to their patients and provide holistic care (Nikfarid et al., 2018). My philosophy is grounded on this requirement and could therefore be used to foster love and all-around care in healthcare facilities. Also, my philosophy can be applied in research to establish the effects of compassionate and holistic care in realizing the wellness of the patients. The last area in which the philosophy can be applied is in administration. Nurses need to be advocates for patient rights and needs (Miami Dade College, 2020). The advocacy component is aligned with my philosophy and could be applied in the formulation of policies that protect the rights of patients from violation by nurses and other healthcare practitioners.
My Philosophy’s Strength and Limitations
The strength of
