Dementia is a global deficiency characterized by loss of cognitive function- for example, memory loss, the decline in intellectual ability, personality shifts, and poor judgment. Forgetfulness becomes dementia when it moves from being a norm. It can, however, be found in all ethnic communities and can be caused by conditions that affect brain functions (Mehrotra &Wagner, 2013). Jain (2012) says that it is a common deficiency of cortical functions without gross obscuring of cognizance. Conventional conditions causing dementia include Alzheimer’s disease (AD), vascular dementia, drug induced dementia, chronic medical conditions, and depression. The common type of dementia is AD (Mehrotra &Wagner, 2013).
Patients suffering from dementia can be treated using antidepressant drugs. This not only makes them overcome their depression but also makes them improve cerebral functioning (Sigelman & Rider, 2014). A combination of psychotherapy and different treatment proves the most efficient way to treat patients.
One of the predominant typecasts of aging is amnesia. Although people of all ages forget things, if an old person forgets then it is attributed to aging (Mehrotra &Wagner, 2013). Although dementia is not part of normal being, the rates increase steadily with age (Sigelman & Rider, 2014). When someone has Alzheimer’s disease (AD), he/she just knows he will forget things. This advances as a person ages.
Alzheimer’s disease strikes people at the later decades of life. It is caused by the loss of connections between neurons, deterioration, and death of neurons leading to decreasing mental functioning. There is no cure for AD despite the availability of several drugs.
