Role of Nurses: PICO(T) Approach to Diabetic Foot
PICO(T) research framework is an efficient approach to creating an effective nursing intervention for a nursing problem. PICO(T) is an acronym for Population/Patient, Intervention, Comparison, Outcome, and Time. The paper highlights the nursing gap surrounding the management of diabetic foot and applies a PICO(T) analysis to formulate a research question. The essay also identifies and reviews secondary resources to address the research question by highlighting evidence extracted from the relevant sources.
The nursing care gap identified in the local facility is the inadequate management of a patient with diabetic foot. The newly recruited nurse admitted to having insufficient information and lacked the necessary skills and knowledge to educate patients diagnosed with diabetic foot. The concern is similar to the findings of Kaya and Karaca (2018) that a significant population of nurses lack training on patient education and prevention of complications of diabetes, such as the diabetic foot. Furthermore, the nurses trained on diabetic foot care did not conduct the patient education.
Formulation of a research question using the PICO(T) framework provides the basis for conducting primary or secondary research to bridge the nursing gap identified among the newly trained nurses. The research question for analysis is: Among patient patients with diabetic foot, does patient education by the nurse, compared to other healthcare staff, reduce the complications and readmissions over a lifetime.
The population for the research is diabetic patients at risk of diabetic foot. The intervention is nursing patient education on footcare. The outcome is a reduction in the complications such as foot ulcers, gangrene, and abscesses that may necessitate readmission. The timeline is a lifetime since diabetes is a lifelong condition that requires continuous patient-centered care (Jain, 2016). Formulation of a research question using the PICO(T) framework provides the basis of conducting a primary or secondary study to solve a nursing problem
