Role of Nurses in Healthcare System
Nurses are very notable people in the healthcare system. Their expertise is of great help in health promotion.
Some of the duties of nurses include: taking care of ailing patients; giving advise to patients pertaining to their health; giving doctors vital information in relation to the patients' health so that the doctors can decide on what action to take next; handling most of the paperwork in the hospital; and are also always available for consultation.
Nurses at times bend the rules and go against the policies of the hospital; especially in situations where following the workflow is perceived to be cumbersome, time-consuming, or when a patient's life is at stake. This bending of the rules is known as a workaround. In some contexts, workarounds are beneficial and can get the job done in the shortest way possible; and might even save lives. Whereas in some cases, workarounds may be calamitous. A good example of a workaround is skipping the Body Mass Index (BMI) procedure, and assuming from the visibility that the weight-to-height ratio of a patient is satisfactory.
BMI is crucial in diagnosing a patient's risk of contracting weight-related diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Therefore, skipping this procedure in healthcare may expose a patient to the risk of getting the above-mentioned diseases. From my standpoint, even if the patient looks fine from the visibility, it's still recommended to get their BMI. It's apparent that every nurse knows the meaningfulness of BMI.
