Human health is critical for the normal functioning of body systems. A body system is comprised of body parts that perform specific functions. There are different body systems such as circulatory, digestive, endocrine, nervous, reproductive, respiratory, skeletomuscular, the skin, and urinary. Health studies have identified unique problems and diseases affecting each system. Normal functioning of affected body parts is affected and impaired by diseases. Studies have identified the different classification of diseases such as communicable or non-communicable diseases, infectious diseases, hereditary diseases, deficiency diseases, and physiological diseases. Diseases manifested in the human body are distinguished through signs and symptoms. There are many diseases such as asthma, arthritis, cancer, diabetes, heart disease, lung disease, and stroke. Diabetes has been selected as the topic of discussion. According to Diabetes (2006), diabetes is a chronic disease that impairs the body’s ability to use food properly. Diabetes has been identified by Zimmet et al. (2014) as a 21st challenge due to its consequences. Data gathered by the author shows that the number of people with diabetes has increased from 180 million in 1980-422 million in 2014. According to Roglic (2016), uncontrolled diabetes leads to complications in many body organs. Some of those are the eyes, blood vessels, and kidney which is critical in the normal functioning of the human being. Damaged blood vessels and nerves lead to loss of vision. Kidney failure, heart attacks, strokes, and lower-limb amputations cause disability and shorten lives.
The pancreas is a body organ critical to the digestive system. It produces the hormone insulin. Insulin helps the body to convert food into energy. Glucose builds up in the blood when the pancreas fails to make insulin or the body cannot use insulin properly.
Normally the insulin helps the body digest all fats and minerals. An increase in blood glucose leads to diabetes. An increase in insulin disturbs fats and protein metabolism. This causes obesity. Diabetic peoples are at risk when their blood sugar is too high or when it's too low.
