B. Community Health Nursing Diagnosis
My nursing diagnostic statement for the Los Angeles County community is the increased prevalence of COVID-19 infections related to lack of knowledge on effective preventive measures for its control among the county's residents.
B1. Health Inequity/Disparity
There is a notable health disparity among the resins of Los Angeles County regarding the management of covid-19. According to Macrotrends (2021), the county has 12,447,000 people and is the most populous county in the US after New York. As of January 7, 2021, the county had a total of 871,404 confirmed covid-19 cases and 11,545 deaths (Public Health Los Angeles County (PHLAC), 2021). The high covid-19 prevalence confirms that a significant portion of the population is still not informed on the effective strategies they should adopt to combat the virus's spread. The infections also reveal that the county's residents are not appropriately adhering to healthcare professionals' preventive measures, such as wearing facemasks, maintaining hand hygiene, and social distancing. There may also be barriers in the county that foster increased cases of COVID-19 infections. Raouafi, Achiche, and Raison (2018) assert that economically disadvantaged communities may not afford the preventive supplies likely to shield them from infections. Thus, there is a need for the residents to be info4mewd and supported to ensure that they adhere to the preventive measures of controlling the spread of the virus.
B1A. Primary Community and Prevention Resources
There are some primary resources within the community that can help control the spread of the virus. The first is the presence of healthcare professionals in the community. The practitioners are the community's health advisors and occasionally empower the residents on the best strategies for controlling the infections' spread. According to Kane et al. (2016), healthcare professionals' role is to ensure that the community is empowered on health matters. Therefore, medical professionals need to educate the residents on the best ways of preventing the spread of COVID-19. The other primary community resources are individual well-wishers and philanthropic organizations. These parties provide face masks, sanitizers, and testing supplies to protect the residents while ensuring that those infected are timely identified and slated from the other community members.
Several primary prevention strategies currently used and recommended by healthcare. The first is frequent washing of hands. According to WHO (2020), the virus stays on objects for a maximum of 9 hours, calling for individuals to continually wash hands upon touching surfaces. Also, individuals have been advised to sneeze and cough in their bent elbow and avoid touching their nose, hands, and mouth. Los Angeles, just like other counties, has limited social gatherings to combat the spread of the virus. Nicola et al. (2020) assert that lockdowns and curfews are some of the county's measures to limit people's interactions and subsequent control of the spread of the disease. Lastly, the community residents have been asked to put on facemasks when in public to ensure that they do not contract the virus. I drove around my community to perform a windshield survey. I noticed that a significant portion of the residents was wearing masks. Some middle-aged people were not wearing masks or maintaining social distance to prevent the spread of Covid-19.
B1B. Underlying Causes
There are several factors attributed to the high prevalence of covid-19 in Los Angeles County. First is the relaxation of the COVID-19 control measures in the community. Some residents do not wear masks when moving in public (Eddy, Schuster & Sase, 2020). Thus, they are exposed to the virus, which they subsequently spread to other members of their households. During weekends and holidays, some families hold house parties where they invite friends. The social gatherings have been described as avenues for transmitting the virus from one party to another, hence the county's high prevalence of COVI-19.
Additionally, some households are economically disadvantaged, making it hard to afford the hand sanitizers and quality facemasks. The covid-19 pandemic has led to the loss of jobs and reduced disposable income. Therefore, some of the breadwinners cannot afford the facemasks and hand sanitizers whose use has highly been advocated for by the international and local health organizations. Also, the lockdowns have limited accessibility of the households to the resources required to curb the virus's spread (Nicola et al., 2020). The limited accessibility has forced some of the Los Angeles residents to live without the requisite resources and materials to control the disease's spread, thus increasing their likelihood of exposure.
Also, false information from social media concerning the transmission of the virus has resulted in its widespread. In its early stages of emergence, the whole world knew nothing much about COVID-19. There was also false information about the disease's transmission channels and how the virus could be cured. Individuals read and conceived the message as true, and advising them otherwise has been hard for medical practitioners (Lin et al., 2020). Regrettably, the information is false and has countered the positive measures being implemented by the healthcare agencies to curb the virus's spread. When fed with incorrect information regarding their health, individuals tend to believe that they fail to practice the evidence-based practices confirmed to be effective in managing the prevailing conditions.
B2. Evidence-Based Practice
There is a need for the application of evidence-based practice to control the spread of infectious diseases. According to Eddy et al. (2020), the high prevalence of infectious diseases is attributable to the lack of adequate and appropriate control measures that could have otherwise curbed the disease transmission to other parties in the communities. The best evidence-based practice is the public's empowerment on the best strategies for preventing the spread of covid-19. An empowerment community is a healthy society considering that people would make informed health decisions, resulting in minimal rates of covid-19 cases. Eddy et al. (2020) opine that health organizations managing environmental and community health should provide the community with appropriate and up-to-date information and guidance to enable them to control infectious diseases.
There are several practices confirmed to be effective in preventing the spread of covid-19. For instance, the Center for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC) (2020) reports that face masks reduce infection risks by 35%, while hand hygiene practices such as hand sanitizing and frequent washing of hands after touching surfaces reduce infection risks by 85%. CDC (2020) recommends disinfection of surfaces with 70% alcoholic sanitizers, diluted bleach, or any chemical disinfectant capable of killing the virus before it spread to other individuals. According to the CDC (2020), individuals need to wash their hands for at least 20 seconds with soap and running water or use hand sanitizers with at least 60% alcohol. Also, people must avoid social gatherings and keep a 6-feet distance to curb the virus's spread. Therefore, the community needs to be empowered on these evidence-based practices whose adoption would minimize the disease's rates of spread.
B2A. Identification of Data
Los Angeles is one of the populous counties in California. The state had 2, 568,641 total confirmed covid-19 cases and 28,538 deaths as at January 7, 2021 (CDC COVID Data Tracker, 2020). Los Angeles as a county had 871 404 positive cases and 11,545 death at as January 7, 2021 (PHLAC, 2021). The total number of people infected with the virus in the US on January 7, 2021 was 21,539,398 with 364,029 being reported dead. Thus, the population of Los Angeles being infected with COVID-19 is approximately 11.9% of the national data. The high rate of infection in the county confirm that a significant number of people fail to adhere to the evidence-based practices instituted to curb the spread of the virus. Thus, there is a need for health promotion campaigns targeting the public to ensure that they are informed of the benefits of adhering to the health recommendations.
C1. Social Media Campaign Objective
