The demand for organ donation has risen over the years with the number of potential recipients of organ donations increasing in number. There are many people in need of organ donations thus the demand surpasses the number of donors around the globe. Organ donation is the selfless donation of biological tissues of the human body from a dead or a live person to an individual who is in need of a transplant and giving them a second chance to live. These tissues are extracted from the body through a surgery when a donor has been proved medically and socially fit for the donation of a transplant. Many lives are being lost due to lack of people who can donate their body organs to save their lives. As a result, the lack of sufficient organs for transplantation to meet the rising demand has led to a major organ shortage crisis all over the world. Consequently, there is a rise in number of patients on the waiting list as well as those dying while waiting to get a donor. According to Woener, about 121,600 people were reported to be on the waiting list for organ donation in the United States as of March 2014 (Woener, 2014). The organ shortage has deprived millions of people a better life in addition to making them pay a lot of money for alternative medical care, for instance dialysis. Therefore, it is important to find a solution to the organ shortage problem.
One of the solutions to organ donation is that, there should be awareness about organ donation because so many people are not aware that they can save life if they donate a certain part of their body. There is need for the implementation of educational programs both in public and private to educate them on the need for organ donations and its benefits (Abouna, 2008). If awareness is created, there will be an increase in number of the people registering to donate organs to those in need. In addition, there should be social support and promotional support for organ donation in all states. Abouna writes, the people should be educated about "the need and benefits of organ donation ( 34). According to Abouna, if the public is educated on the benefits of organ transplant and why it is important to donate organs for that in need, the organ shortage predicament will be solved and the death rates resulting to organ transplant shortage will be at reduced levels (2008). In addition, the long waiting list will be reduced because; there will be more organs available for transplant.
In addition, by explaining to people the reasons why they should donate their organs will help in getting more organs for donation. When people are encouraged to donate their organs through promotional and educational programs will provide enough organs for transplant thus solving the organ shortage problem. Tabarock notes, "currently, most organ donors come from patients officially pronounced brain dead'' (607). Nonetheless, Woener notes that, people should be encouraged to donate their organs after their death especially due to cardiac arrest (Woener, 2014). Nonetheless, it is important for people to take the initiative of signing an advance directive of their willingness to become donors when they can no longer speak r they are on the verge of dying. If people are educated on the importance of signing these advance directives to become donors, the organ donor shortage dilemma will be solved. Nonetheless, strict regulations should be put in place for such people in order to prevent them from being executed for their organs. Therefore, persuading people to donate their organs when they die can be a good solution to organ donor problem.
The chronic organ donor shortage can be solved by implementing a legal paying system for organ donors who donate their organs for transplant (Tabarrok, 2010). Through this system, potential organ donors will avail themselves for medical examinations because they are guaranteed an insurance cover by the state in addition to being paid for the donation. If all states adopt the legal payment system for organ donors, the chronic organ shortage and the lack of organ donors’ menace will be solved. If the living donors are paid, many people will turn up to donate their organs thus solving the problem of organ donor shortage. Tabarrok writes, "the organ shortage can be solved by paying living donors'' (610). If organ donors are offered payment, many will turn up and it is an effective way to solve the donor shortage problem and increase organ donations (Tabarrok, 2010). Moreover, it will decrease the death rates of recipients who have to wait for a long time to get donors. It addition, it will help reduce the waiting list of patients waiting for an organ transplant across the globe.
There is need for more donors of organs due to the rise in numbers of the patients on the waiting list for organ transplants. The lack of organs for transplant has become a big issue that s becoming worse than better. The public should take an initiative to be able to help these people who are in need of organ transplants instead of living them to die, yet their lives can be saved.
