Temper Tantrums in Toddlers:
Causes and Management
Have you ever been frustrated by your young one? It is a common phenomenon especially with the young ones of the age 1 to 2 years will be naughty and have a lot of misbehaviour that will be a great nuisance to their parents or caretakers. A tantrum is a way young ones can show their dissatisfaction with situation at hand. (Kapalka, 2007). Sometimes a child has so much trouble in his or her thinking about an issue or completing some assignment. A child could be lacking the correct words or vocabulary to put across his or her feelings, in this case, frustration may ignite anger that would result in a temper tantrum.
Temper tantrum causes a child to cry, scream, and throw legs in protest or even hitting himself down. This behaviour is present in both girls and boys that are in the age bracket of one to three years. In older children, tantrum is a learned activity that could be brought out by tolerating it or rewarding it so that the child would be satisfied with that she or he needed. (Harvey & Penzo, 2009). In young ones, this is not the case because it is a stage that they have to go through.
A study by pediatric neuropsychological has proved that the misbehaviour are normal biological processes that result as a reaction to the state of anger as well as frustration that a child could be facing at the moment, moreover one can predict the next reaction after the unexpected result. (Glasser, Bowdidge, & Bravo, 2007). However, tantrum will be a great nuisance to most people especially to the busy parents and caretakers. Sometimes the reaction to frustration by the kid could cause damages to properties or injuries to himself or herself.
It is not easy to deal with tantrums in toddlers, and parents find it great challenge behaviour to manage. A research has revealed ways of encouraging good behaviour among the young ones and they can also go a long way in dealing with tantrums. Establishing a daily and consistent habit so that the child will know what to do and at what time. Making it something that could be done on a daily basis will enable the child to know his or her limits. Planning your activities a head and knowing when the child will be unlikely exhausted is the next thing to put into consideration. The child gets occupied with other things when you are busy so that his or her attention is fully focused on that, whether it is a toy or some snack.
It is important to encourage your child to try using words as the research shows that young children can understand many words than using these words to express their feelings. (Burn, et al., 2013). Moreover, using sign language creates an impact on their actions a...
