Effect of Caffeine on Cognitive Functions
Caffeine is the world’s highly consumed food and supplement. It is commonly taken as coffee but also available in the form of tablets, foods and other beverages. Caffeine has a psychoactive effect when it is taken in low doses, and in recent times, products like energy drinks have emerged in the market that also contain caffeine as the active ingredient.
The effects of caffeine as having a stimulating effect on the human body has been a knowledge passed along some cultures for centuries. Coffee origins are placed in Arabia with places like Yemen being among the first countries to grow and use coffee as a stimulant and as medicine. With time, the use of coffee spread from Arabia to all corners of the world. There have been studies in humans and animals to find out the effect of caffeine on cognitive functions. These studies have shown that caffeine consumption can greatly reduce the chances of developing neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease.
