Non-regulated or unlicensed healthcare assistant or providers are known as unregulated health care workers (UHWs). In United States (US), patient care before 1990s was provided by licensed practice nurses (LPSNs and registered nurses (RNs) while UHWs provided supportive assistance. However, since 1990, the role of UHW shifted to patient care from supportive care due to the shortage of nurses and increase in the cost of health care delivery (Association, 2005). The functions and roles of UHWs have therefore expanded in today’s healthcare setting with a significant increase in employment of UHW. However, there has been no decision around defining their contributions in their partnership and collaboration with other registered nurses to improve health outcomes (Witzig, 2014).
