Addiction, particularly alcohol addiction, is a major public health issue globally. This paper used the PICO question: For healthcare providers does the use of supportive methods reduce the risks of addiction compared with no interventions? The tragically high number of avoidable deaths caused by alcohol-related injuries is a growing concern in the medical community. It is estimated that over 88,000 people each year in the United States and the European Union lose their lives as a direct result of excessive alcohol consumption (Wason et al., 2021). Additionally, about one-fourth of all male deaths between the ages of 15 and 39 are linked to alcohol (Kruse et al., 2020). From these statistics, it is evident that there is an urgent need for a new and creative approach to dealing with alcohol abuse, addiction, and recovery as a result of the significant health and economic costs associated with alcohol dependence.
Summary of the research article
Addiction is a health problem that requires close monitoring of the patient to guide them in their journey of behavior change. Kruse et al.'s article reveals the importance of telemedicine in the management of alcohol-addicted patients. In the current technology and internet-based world, I believe the use of telemedicine would be effective and convenient as argued by the article's authors. Kruse et al. (2020) conducted a systematic review utilizing the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines.
