Africa Americans Naming Traditions.
Names are meaningful identities given to a person. Therefore, names play a huge role in a person’s character and status. By a person’s status I mean, having a particular perception about a person by their traits and the meaning of their name. What is more fascinating is that names have origins. They are associated with certain roles and in other cases have cultural histories. According to Elizabeth Pearson’s journal article “Our Evolving Black American Naming Traditions,” she argues that given names can provide important social and spiritual insights. She explains that Black American names were overly influenced by slavery. Due to a different set of culture and the harsh conditions of slavery, managing African culture was impossible. This led to the loss of a link to their heritage. Elizabeth’s article advocates for love of the human race. I, therefore, agree that naming should not be based on a person’s color or race. I further agree that naming can easily influence a person socially and spiritually.
