When Abraham Lincoln was elected the U.S president in 1860 the Southerners were outraged by the turn of events. The party which sponsored him to the presidency was discriminatory and promoted slavery. Ideally, this led to the split of six states from the union which eventually led to war. The war between North and South America was basically due to the slavery experienced in the Southern states although President Abraham Lincoln was of the opinion that it was meant to save the Union.
It is perceived that the South won Reconstruction after the civil as compared to the North which won the war. Essentially, encouragement from President Andrew Johnson's reconstruction policy imposed no severe penalties on South, and this made them elect former Confederates to state local and national offices. Furthermore, they refused to ratify the Fourteenth Amendment and bullied loyalists. The abolishment of slavery and a right to vote was given to the Southerners which helped them participate in their democratic rights.
The military was not effectively used in the South during the period of reconstruction since they formulated rules and regulation which were discriminatory. Basically, they formed an alliance with the Congress which helped them wrestle the reconstruction policy from Johnson's hand.
