Abstract
Street gangs are comprised of members who have a shared identify and have alliance to a particular gang. The gang offers its members financial security, protection from other rival gangs, and an escape from poverty and feelings of frustration. This is what attracts potential members to join. Gang violence is prevalent with the gang members fighting and attacking members of rivals gangs to protect their territories and acquire dominance over new ones. This paper discusses the history of the Bloods and Crips gangs and the origins of the rivalry between the two. Studies are used to map the inter-gang and intra-gang violence between the two. Moreover, the history and origins of the Black Gangster Disciples is discussed, focusing on their rise to prominence and subsequent involvement in narcotics trafficking.

Street gangs are described as social groups whose individuals are unified by their affiliation to a particular gang which then becomes their shared identity (Fleisher, 2005). Being affiliated with a particular gang probably increases the risk of inter gang violence which strengthens group solidarity. Gang violence is a severe threat to the security and safety of the modern 21st century society. It is indeed a menace that endangers the progressiveness, stability and a positive future.
