Introduction
Caribbean nations have a long history which unites them more than it separates them. Many inhabitants of the Caribbean nations trace their origin to Africa, and many of them are of African descent. Many of the countries were used as sugar plantations by the French, Spanish and British colonial powers. Due to the high demand for sugar in Europe, many of these countries became colonies of these powers. Large chunks of land were used for sugarcane plantations which were used by the European market. The need to used cheap labour in these plantations, the colonial powers brought slaves who were of from Africa and the ones sold from America who were also black. The slave labour was free, thus enabling the colonial powers to produce sugar at the lowest cost as possible. Once slaves were freed after the abolition of the slave trade and the continuous struggle of slaves, they mixed with indigenous populations of these countries, thus leading to the formation mixed cultures in all aspects of living. Different countries in the Caribbean region ended up having a culture which had a lot of similarities as it had differences. This essay will look on to how the countries of Puerto Rico, Haiti and Jamaica had similarities and differences in their slavery, colonial rule and the race.
