During the world's scramble, Spain was one of the powers that were interested in acquiring new territories. When they acquired these territories, they treated them as an extension of the empire. They adopted a policy of assimilation, where the colonies' members were taught the ways and culture of Spain. As such, the colonies were considered as New Spain. By new Spain, it means that Spain considered its colonies as part of their empire, New Spain.
When he discovered America, Christopher Columbus describes its inhabitants, the Red Indians, as people who did not have any civilization. The reason being, from where he had come from, they had a civilization in the form of the way they clothed, the way they lived. However, the Red Indians did not wear any clothes, which was awkward for him; they also lived in informal settlements. The red Indians' main activity was hunting and gathering while he had come from one of the most civilized societies in the world. Christopher wants spices and silk from the red Indians.
Montezuma greets Cortez by first kissing the earth once he is above the ship while carrying gifts to Cortez. Cortez then sends them with gifts. Aztec treat the Spanish with a lot of contempt.
In Spain, silk and spices were considered goods of royalty. During the reign of the Ottoman empire, the empire cut off the land trade route used to access India, where they acquired their goods from. As such, Columbus took a voyage to look for a sea route to India looking for silk and spices, and when he discovered America, it was an added advantage because there was no rivalry.
The indigenous people of the Caribbean were made slaves. When the Spain empire colonized the Caribbean, they established many and large sugar plantations. For the sugar plantations to run smoothly, there required a lot of labor. The most available labor force, which was cheap and readily available, was indigenous people. They were forced to work in the plantations for long periods.
The Spanish belittled the indigenous people and treated them as children. The policy that was employed by the Spanish was assimilation, where they taught their subjects Spain's culture and expected that the subjects fully convert to Spain's way of life. This did not consider the fact that the natives already had their way of life. For instance, the natives had their religion, but the Spanish came and required that they all converted to Christianity, which they were advocating for.
