Causes and Effects of Truman’s Decision
The U.S. President Harry Truman was prompted to make a decision of unprecedented consequences after completion of Manhattan project – nuclear bomb manufacturing. The power to end World War II was in his hands but he had to unleash the most destructive nuclear weapon at the time. The war made American economy sluggish and the U.S. army equipment and manpower were quickly diminishing yet the Japanese military was adamant to surrender. Even after American forces invading Iwo Jima and Okinawa, the two million Japanese soldiers strongly guarded the rest of the islands against further attacks (Judge & Langdon, 2016). For Truman, as Judge and Langdon (2016) argue, the decision to drop atomic bombs in Hiroshima and Nagasaki was the most difficult decision of his presidential career. This paper evaluates the causes and the effects of Truman’s decision to use nuclear weapons to end World War II.
