Effect of corruption in Africa
Corruption is a social phenomenon characterized by the violation of individual rights through the abuse of public power for private gain. It exists in every society and affects individuals at all levels, who are often disadvantaged as a result of the embezzlement of funds. Corruption may be in form of giving and receiving bribes, nepotism, graft, embezzlement of funds, and abuse of discretion. It is important to discuss how corruption transforms the usual way things work and affects life in Africa
Lately, the taking of bribes by the administrative police personnel has pulled behind development in the African continent, where the Africans have been brainwashed and thought that that is the right way to get quick assistance or avoidance to be caught up with the hand of the law. It’s very unfortunate that leaders in the office can block the opportunity of a person because of nepotism, separating Africans on the bases of their tribe. This has brought ethnic wars which retard the growth and development of the continent at large, a good example is Kenya where a political crisis in 2007 causes the death of young individuals was evidenced and displacement from their homes.
Corruption has brought about a lot of effects that have been striking in Africa. Corruption among the people and corruption by politicians, businessmen, and government officials creates inequality forever. Government policies are often controlled by the wealthy, and not all people have equal access to education and good medical care (Akimova, 2020). This means that there are big differences between rich and poor, or even between city and country.
In many cases, graft, embezzlement of firms, and abuse of discretion have led to political instability and the rise of dictatorships in the African political realm. A good example of is the poverty state of upper voltage today, where a cabinet executive promised wealth and powers if he would kill the sitting president in the 1970s.
More so, Corruption has affected the lives of many people. The leaders who have committed crimes by using their influence to help themselves get prosperous, stealing money meant for the people, and using government institutions to benefit themselves and their family members, have ruined lives forever, they can no longer provide essential services such as health care, education, and effective security agencies that would have prevented these wars from occurring in the first place.
According to Akimova, (2020). Unfairness and illegal enrichment lower the quality of education for students, greater unemployment rates, and increase burdens on health systems. This is because the rich can use their money for bribes to get their way but the poor are stuck in poverty because they cannot afford to give bribes or buy favors from those in power. This also creates large-scale unemployment rates as many who cannot afford this kind of money turn to picking pockets or other forms of crime which can increase health care costs due to an increased number of sick people in society.
At least there are ways to prevent and fight it Adam alt, (2020). It is mostly the responsibility of the government to ensure that they put in place systems that would educate citizens on what fighting corruption even means, and then have them actually follow through with their duties. Other tactics like holding officials accountable for their action
