In the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the private sector serves as the primary source of employment by providing jobs to about 63 percent of the entire workforce. While the UAE federal government provides employment to 8 percent of the remaining population, the remaining portion of the country’s workforce are employed in local governments, diplomatic missions and in private residences as domestic workers (Sims, 2006, p.112). As an Islamic country, UAE nationals exhibit certain characteristic that illustrate their willingness to provide social support to the hundreds of expatriates working in the country.
When expatriate workers arrive in the UAE, they are often confronted with numerous positive and negative facets that are associated with international relocations. Most of the expatriate workers in the UAE are confronted with high levels of uncertainty when they arrive in these new environments. The UAE is an economy that is highly dependent on both the production and exportation of gas and oil (Sims, 2006, p.113). However, the social structure and the identity of people in the UAE is founded on which tribe or clan that one belongs. This makes it quite difficult for expatiates coming to this country feel welcomed into the existing social circles.
