Student’s Name Professor’s Name Course Number Date Human Will Human will is the capacity of humans to decide what they want to do instead of just reacting impulsively. We act impulsively many times without even thinking but we also have the power to select different actions after thinking wisely and choosing to do what we want from the choices we have. Many philosophers wrote about human will and they discuss both of its aspects that either will is free or determined. Many philosophers said our will is completely determined, and we can do nothing different or unique by our choices. They consider free will an illusion and this is called determinism. Thus, they consider that we are not the owners of our choices. While many other philosophers say that human will is not completely determined and we are accountable and responsible for our own choices. Hobbes and Berkley believe that human will is free in the absence of any opposition or hindrance. In other words, the will is free if the actions that we want to perform are not prevented or hindered by any external force. He also considers a person is responsible for his own good or bad deeds and he has a choice or ownership of his own actions. Locke is said to be a soft determinist but in reality, he is a libertarian, and he says that the actions produced by our volitions arise from our desires. According to him, free will does not really exist, and it’s an illusion. Further, the will of a person is fixed and he is not responsible for either his good or bad deeds cause everything he does has a reason in past and he had no other choice than doing that and every event in the universe is casually inevitable. Therefore, a person would never be responsible or held accountable for his bad or good deeds because there were consequences of a series of actions that already happened in past.
