There have been numerous heated debates about whether nationalism is good or bad. This controversy hinges on the fact that the main objective of a country is to have some sorts of resonance within its citizens, who prefer having a connection with their place of residence. Consequently, they support their state over others by defending it within the conversations of socialism, economy, and politics. Furthermore, citizens gain a sense of national consciousness by exalting their country. Opponents of nationalism aver that it could be a source of death for millions of people since it is associated with war-ridden nations. Despite a few reservations about nationalism, it enhances unity, promotes culture, and softens the burden of economic change.
Nationalism enables citizens to unite and fight for their rights. Across the world, colonized countries, inspired by the desire to gain freedom, rose against their imperial masters. For instance, Filipinos worked in collaboration to fight against Americans, Japanese, and Spanish. According to (Preißler, 2009), nationalism enabled Rizal to unit inhabitants of islands, who did not think of belonging to one country. Currently, the struggle against modern forms of imperialism draws its concepts from nationalism, which remains a potent force for liberation. It enables colonized countries to dispel the notion that some countries are intrinsically superior through questioning their perpetual insubordination. Furthermore, nationalism helps underdeveloped countries collectively achieve their missions without assistance from industrialized ones. It also enables all communities to view themselves as equal to others.
People could preserve their culture by embracing nationalism and discarding negative perceptions about it. The idea is similar to private property ownership, which is inherent in all human life. Typically, the Vietnamese War initially commenced because of a nationalistic approach. However, the conflict diverged and took a communist approach as the driving force for the country’s independence. In such an event, the Vietnamese could have maintained nationalism as the focus, and then they could have taken a better route rather than engaging in deadly wars (Preißler, 2009). Furthermore, China could not have assisted them in their struggle for independence. Consequently, all countries should practice to achieve their desires and preserve their cultures.
Countries that enhance nationalism often soften the burden of economic challenges. Specifically, when they are connected to compatriots, citizens support national initiatives, such as education systems and employment programs, which enable the country to reduce poverty. Positive nationalism encourages a country to remain tolerant and open towards global business since its citizens embrace social, economic, and political justice (Shevel, 2009). More importantly, it motivates people to unit when facing calamities, such as fire, flood, and earthquake.
