The United States’ criminal justice system has instituted elaborate means to reduce the rate of recidivism. This has come with the realization that individuals on probation have a high likelihood of committing crimes. A multiplicity of factors, namely social isolation, drug abuse, and mental disorders among others are behind the high rates of crime among individuals on probation. Probation officers have an upbeat task in tracking and following on probationers to track any criminality behavior. It is a difficult task that requires an officer to sum up his/her courage and deal with substantial stress. Being a probationer is not easy either as individuals are expected to survive almost entirely on their own under immense challenges and at the same time abide by the law. This paper will be looking at the roles of both a probation officer and a probationer, the main challenges and tribulations as well the practical solutions to them.
