THE CONGRESS IN THE UNITED STATES
The American government's legislative branch is known as Congress. Its responsibility is to make laws, pass treaties and issue federal paychecks to elected officials (USC, 2022a). Also, Congress plays an important role in advancing national interests, individual rights, civil liberties, and economic welfare. For example, it establishes norms and rules. In addition, Congress works through committees and bicameral chambers, passing laws that address broad topics, including national security, health care, education, and financial regulations (USC, 2022a).
The United States has a federal and state congress to balance the national government's interests with the needs of the individual states. The federal Congress represents the national government's interests, while the state congress represents the interests of the individual states (USC, 2022a). The federal government is responsible for the common defense, foreign policy, interstate commerce, and other national concerns. On the other hand, the state governments are responsible for most of the day-to-day governance of the people. This separation of powers guarantees that neither the federal government
