Oceanography can be considered to be one of the newest fields in science, but its roots can be traced back to several decades ago when people started exploring the coastlines by the use of rafts. The very first groups involving seafaring explorers as well as oceanographers started analyzing the ocean on a different perspective from what people were viewing it (Jochum & Murtugudde, 2006). The roots of oceanography rose when people started gaining interests regarding the region below the surface of the sea, rise and fall of tides, and the numerous other processes occurring along the coasts.
The earliest history of oceanography can be pointed to 7250 B.C (Pinet, 2011). During a period when there was trading between the mainland Greek and Melos, in the Aegean island. During this period, there was little knowledge by people about ocean piloting as well as vessel manufacturing technology (Jochum & Murtugudde, 2006). For this reasons, their voyages were unsafe, especially during the times of storms as well as other natural calamities.
