In the midst of the worst of the Great Depression, James was born in 1922. His parents eventually split up as a result of the financial difficulties the family faced. James stayed with his mother, and the two had to change places often while actively looking for jobs to support themselves. James was an adventurous and curious child despite the difficulties.
