USA Patriot Act
The USA Patriot Act is a legislation that was passed by the United States Congress in 2001 to enhance the performance of the law enforcement agencies and help the criminal justice system as a whole in dealing with terrorism challenges. This Act came about immediately after the 9/11 incident that left many Americans dead and thousands of others seriously injured. The Act is referred to as the USA Patriot Act because of its full name, which adopted the above abbreviations. The Act’s name is Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism (USA Patriot). The US Senate passed the USA Patriot Act by a unanimous vote of 98-1 and in the Congress by 357-66 (Justice.gov). Following the 9/11 incident, the lawmakers sought to work together and arm the law enforcement agencies with the right tools that they believed would help prevent another 9/11 from happening.
