We Owe Allegiance to No Crown is a painting by Philadelphia artist John Woodside, which was painted in 1814 before the war of 1812 between the United States and Britain was over. The painting was displayed at the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C. This painting reflects how many Americans understood that war's meaning. The war inspired Woodside to respond to the defeat of Britain through an allegorical message. The painting is a depiction of a sailor holding a flag, with a Laurel Wreath being crowned by Liberty.
