1. Registers for arithmetic, addressing, or control functions
Registers in the CPU refers to small storages in the computer architecture that perform functions of holding instructions and data that are to be executed by the processor. Processor registers are critical in program execution since they allow for fast access to data. Apart from instruction register, a processor has other different types of registers that include; program counter that tracks program execution, accumulator that stores memory data and general-purpose registers that stores data on a temporary basis during program execution (Stallings, n.d.). Memory address register and memory data registers are two extra register classes that support communication between RAM and CPU.
