Criminal profiling is arguably an art form as much as it is a professional science practice. In the media and various TV series, profilers are portrayed in several ways. A good modern example of a profiler who exhibits most of the character traits of real-life profilers is a character of DR. Lance Sweets which is played by John Francis Daley of the FOX TV series titled 'Bones'. This character provides aspects of comparative merits as far as psychological profilers are concerned. The character also has some enhance traits for entertainment among other traits that are important in real-life situations. Dr. Sweets, a psychologist, is hired to interview and evaluate two other characters; Dr. Temperance Brennen and Agent Sealy Booth. The doctor was supposed to evaluate if the two could continue a working partnership considering that Booth arrested Bones who is Brennen's father. After establishing that the two had an intact relationship. The FBI recruited him as a criminal profiler. It is arguable he was consulted due to his enhance academic qualifications. At the age of 22, he has a Ph.D. in behavioral analysis, a PsyD in clinical psychology, masters in abnormal psychology and an undergraduate degree.
The character of Dr. Sweets serves many capacities in the series including psychological support to the fictional staff. Dr. Sweets largest contribution to the Jeffersonian and the FBI is data analysis of psychological nature. Dr. Sweets reviews past records and data as well as pertinent evidence by utilizing his skills and expertise to help the agents and the science staffs understand the cognitive motivations of any given committed crime. These crimes include those that occurred in the past and currently considered a cold case or a case that is tied to other elements that are not related to crime cases (Canter & Young, 2009).
It is reasonable to infer that the skill of criminal profiling has a positive merit. This decision is based on a review of sources regarding criminal profiling. Understanding why some personalities tend to commit crimes or a given line of crime styles and to whatever lengths they have gone in order to perpetrate such doings offers a critical way not only to solve the said cases but to also to arrive at intelligent solutions in future cases that are similar or show the same style or pattern.
Being able to recognize patterns cognitively is crucial in determining what evidence will be pertinent and what elements are either essential or non-essential to a criminal case with regards to law enforcement. Schlesinger (2009) has shown that patterns can be used to make predictions based on the behaviors that show a form of consistency with given types of mentalities or personalities. This illustrates what type of person, using their personalities, would be able to carry out a particular crime. This allows the police department and general law enforcement to filter and narrow down their search for a particular type of offender based on the prepared profile that the forensic professionals and psychologists have brought together utilizing careful deductions. In my opinion, criminal profiling is a worthy and effective device in fighting crime.
