International Humanitarian Law
International humanitarian law is a set of rules and principles that seek to protect people who are not or are no longer taking part in hostilities during times of armed conflicts and to restrict the means and methods of warfare employed (Fleck & Bothe, 2013). Also referred to as the law of armed conflict or the law of war, the law was created to address issues of humanitarian concern arising from armed conflicts between states. It outlines the responsibilities of states and non-state armed groups during warfare (Fleck & Bothe, 2013). International humanitarian law defines, among others, the protection of civilians including humanitarian and medical workers during armed conflicts, the unimpeded passage of humanitarian relief, the protection of refugees, the sick, wounded, and prisoners of war, and the freedom of movement of humanitarian relief personnel (Thürer, 2011).
