Warring instances frequently occur, and it is unfortunate that even the ones not directly taking part in the war end up being victims. Since the conditions, participants, and reasons vary, there is a critical need to establish mechanisms that ensure human rights remain supreme in events of the war. In the same case, far from protecting the populace from possible violation of human rights, there should be structures for punishing gross violators of human rights. At this point, the international humanitarian law (IHL) comes in to ensure that, in the event of war, violation of human rights does not happen.
Specifically, the International Humanitarian Law (IHL) is a standardization process of what should take place in a case where international war is inevitable. Whether it is a confrontation, allied missions, or a rescue processes, IHL provides a framework for the war’s regulation. Since it is not everyone that participates, it also helps in the maintenance of balance such that the individuals neutral to the process remain insulated from possible harm. The IHL is, therefore, a regulation whose role is to prioritize human plight to ensure that it becomes a critical consideration despite the type, magnitude, objectives, and location of war among other factors (Alexander, 2015).
