The rate of terror attacks across the globe has risen over the past few decades. Each nation has developed laws and regulations that prevent non-routine forms of political struggle within their borders as a way of ensuring the security and protection of the people. The international community has also been involved at different degrees in the creation of protocols that aim at keeping world peace. After the 9/11 attack in the United States, the need for further regulations governing acts of terrorism across the globe became apparent. Bodies such as the United Nations have been at the forefront of tackling the root causes of terrorism while also coining ways to offer support to victims of such attacks (UNODC, 2018). Two laws and regulations that have been useful in combating terrorism internationally are the Patriot Act and the International Humanitarian Law.
The Patriot Act became an important law globally after the September 11 terrorist attack. The piece of legislation gave more powers to state authorities and courts and placed limitations on issues such as immigration that were declared necessary to fight terrorism in the twenty-first century (Shor, 2011). The Act protects the United States and its allies by making sure that the states have the power to prosecute and extradite individuals to regions with stronger laws. The Patriot Act was developed as a counterterrorism tactic to empower regions and eliminate the vulnerabilities that exist in the defense programs of such nations. By empowering courts to take severe actions against those involved in terrorism, the Act deters and prevents terror attacks in regions where it is implemented.
