Background of National Tobacco Strategy Australia
The national Tobacco Strategy 2012-2018 is a sub-strategy for the National Drug Strategy that complements the preventive health strategy in Australia (Intergovernmental Committee on Drugs, 2018). The aim of this policy initiative is to reduce the tobacco use in Australians. The high tobacco usage in Australia has been impacting people’s heath, environment and economy while causing inequalities across the society. Over past several years, Australian Government has been forming different intervention strategies to reduce smoking prevalence yet, the rates remained too high.
One of the major large scales National Tobacco Policy was run during 1997 in Australia promoted by the anti-smoking campaign (Grogan & Banks, 2020). The current National Tobacco Policy have been stressing on the importance of the previous policies since 1999. The subsequent upgrading of the policy was made in 2004-09 that provided a comprehensive and evidence-based framework for the tobacco control and prevention in Australia (Greenhalgh et al., 2022). In 2004-09 policy, the emphasis was made on seven priority areas including reduction in the use of tobacco, increased promotion for quitting & smoking free messages, improving quality of treatment for smokers, providing support to parents/carers/educators, endorsing the policies preventing social alienation, tailoring the social service messages for ensuring health access by disadvantaged people and focused research on fine-tune policies and programs (Greenhalgh et al., 2022).
Since past decade, there have been encouraging developments in the tobacco control policies in Australia. During 2019, Greg Hunt (Minister for Health) committed to be doubling the 10AUD allocation for the antismoking campaigns in 2020 (Grogan & Banks, 2020). The renewed commitment for reducing the Tobacco consumption tied with the fourth intergovernmental National Tobacco Strategy. The current strategy was formed to mitigate the shortfalls in the 2004-09 strategy especially the few controls available on manufacturing and control of tobacco in Australia. The past policies also failed to address the promotion and availability of the alternative nicotine delivery systems like e-cigarettes.

Tobacco Control Strategy 2012-2018 was driven by the social need of reducing
