Power gives one the ability to exercise full authority over a group of people. Unfortunately, when excess power is given to a person or a group there is a high probability that it will be misused by suppressing others. Consequently, separation of powers is imperative in a democratic environment to prevent those in power from abusing it. The procedures and approaches to separation of powers are all contained in the United States constitution and they give clear-cut directions in organizing the federal government (Burns & Markman, 1987). The federal government is therefore divided into three distinct branches accorded different responsibilities. The executive, judiciary, and the legislature are the branches portraying the practicality of the separation of powers in America.
