United States National Security Council (2016) has indicated that transnational crime is a major threat to national and international security as it has adverse impacts on economic stability, democracy, public health, and public safety of individual countries and the world as a whole. Transnational crime is generally defined as a form of criminal activity that is carried out across national borders (Finckenauer, 2000). They are interstate in nature and undermine the fundamental values of national and international communities. The most common types of transnational crime include money laundering, human trafficking, drug trafficking, theft of art and cultural objects, terrorism, trade in human body parts, cybercrime, and maritime piracy, among others (Ahmed, 2017). Recent years have witnessed the expansion of criminal networks at the international level, coupled with the diversification of their activities. This trend leads to the convergence of threats that have destabilizing and explosive effects (Bersin and Lars, 2019). As a result, there is a need to understand different aspects of transnational crime in order to find ways to combat it effectively and reduce its impact on countries and the globe at large. This paper will focus on two major forms of transnational crimes: money laundering and drug trafficking, as well as evaluate how international policing and investigative agencies are attempting to arrest perpetrators of these transnational crimes.
