ATOM AND THE ATOMIC THEORY
An atom, a term which is most in today’s scientific environment is defined as smallest fundamental unit that make up matter. This term was coined by a Greek Philosopher known as Democritus and he is credited as the first person to show that matter is made up tiny bits known as atomos (atoms). He formulated a theory known as “the theory of the universe” which states that; matter is made up of atoms which a bit smaller and cannot be seen; there is an empty space between atoms; atoms are completely solid and lack any internal structure. Thereafter, other scientists adapted Democritus’ theory and brought about their own theory of the atomic structure.
