Plastic and paper bags are mostly used for containing and carrying products like waste, chemicals, foods, etc. However, paper bags are highly preferred due to their sustainability, considering that they are biodegradable while plastic bags are non-biodegradable. Globally, most countries have banned plastic bags since they are the primary pollutants, given that they can't be recycled.
Globally, many countries have banned plastic bags, replacing them with paper bags (Wagner, 2017). The major contribution towards preferring paper bags to plastic bags is their high decomposition rate compared to plastic bags. Therefore, regardless of their low durability, paper bags are the most efficient methods of packaging, containing, and transporting goods. Due to their high decomposition rate, paper bags are less likely to harm the environment or any living organism – plants and animals (Wagner, 2017). In contrast, plastic bags do not decompose easily, given that they can take up to one thousand years to decompose, thus rendering them disastrous to the environment and all living organisms.
However, plastic bags have some advantages over paper bags, as depicted during their production. Despite petroleum being used in the production of plastic bags, their production process emits less carbon, waste, disastrous by-products than the production of paper bags. Additionally, unlike paper bags, plastic bags are highly reusable, thus rendering them more economical than purchasing new paper bags every time (Sun et al. 2017).
