Overview of motivation and emotion
The study and analysis of motivation is the study of psychology. Through the study of motivation, the reason behind different behavior can be identified. Behavior like why people go to work, why students go to school can be explained using the study of motivation. Motivation is basically the study of why behavior occurs. When investigating the reason behind a person’s behavior, the issue of motivation is addressed. It is usually the push behind an individual’s behavior and actions. It is always concerned with behavior that is goal oriented and usually the push behind the need to achieve the set goals. No clear definition can be given concerning emotions and many attempts have been made on the same but to no success. We can conclude that emotions are the inner appraisal of memories, feelings, and thoughts. The appraisal sometimes involves changes in the environment and psychological changes and is characterized by a behavioral response (Reeve, 2013).
The biology of motivation
The biology of motivation can be explained in many different was. There is the issue of motivation and genetics. An individual may acquire some genes from the parents that are motivating factors towards a person’s choice of behavior. The genes may not necessarily be the behavior displayed but a trigger to certain behaviors. The other notion is survival for the fittest. It explains the need for people to behave the way they do. To survive a person needs to do what they can and this can help explain the type of behavior that is usually displayed.
The psychology of motivation
The psychological part of an individual, contributes largely the motivation of a person. A person can have intrinsic or extrinsic motivation. Intrinsic motivation is within the person. The person has some internal factors that push them toward the desired goal. These factors include issues like personal meaning attached to the task or a desire for happiness or success. Extrinsic motivators are those from the outside of the person. They are mostly external factors. These include social acceptance and a push from other people like parents (Brown, 2003).
External motivators
External factors are mostly from the environment. They are the outside factors that influence the motivation behind the behavior of a person. External factors may be positive or negative. A person may get motivation through a push from people who want the individual to succeed. This is positive external motivation, which may push a person toward a certain behavior. On the other hand, negative external motivation also exists. The wrong individuals or the wrong environmental factors may motivate an individual. The environment may have negative factors that affect how the individual behaves. Issue like the relationship with coworkers or the boss at work can either motivate an individual or make them uncomfortable. Therefore, a person with the right motivation will definitely function well in the environment they are in.
Goal setting
When coming up with goals, an individual is influenced by their cognitive aspect. The individual sets goals according to their emotions and how they feel. This makes sure that the individual has come up with a goal that is in harmony with the person as a whole. In goal setting, a person sets a strategy on how the goal will be handled. The person comes up with a plan of action that will guide the achievement of the goal that has been set. The ease or difficulty of the goal is accessed to help the individual identify the appropriate ways of going about the goal. Once the goal has been worked on and is achieved, the person gains confidence and is able to handle other goals that have been set up.
How the knowledge of emotion and mood help in understanding and responding to human behavior
