Introduction
Understanding the concepts of leadership and management has been debated for a long time. Often, employers use the two expressions synonymously. Management can be defined as a set of procedures that ensure an organization is functional. Management makes an organization to work today as they make it hit targets (Hallinger, 2013). The processes in management include budgeting, planning, clarifying jobs, staffing, problem-solving, and measuring performance. On the other hand, leadership is entirely different. Leadership is all about aligning stakeholders to the vision of any organization, which signifies communication, inspiration, and motivation.
Management and Leadership will exist in tandem if an organization is run efficiently. The management technique referred to as target setting is a concept that only works in the presence of good leadership (Piccolo et al., 2012). Target setting is used to concentrate on specific activities. The ability of organizations to attain a balance between leadership and management is dependent on the context in which it operates. A natural overlap exists between the skills managers and leaders need as leadership and management are distinct concepts.
Major Differences between Managers and Leaders
Major distinct differences exist between Managers and Leaders. Leaders determine the direction and set goals, seek new ways of achieving goals, and challenge the norms. On the contrary, Managers maintain the status quo of the organization (Hallinger, 2013). They focus on conformance to the set standards, manage their individuals and teams, and organize, control, and direct to the set objectives.
Management versus Leadership may be comparatively easy to differentiate between the two yet is complex as many people are both (Piccolo et al., 2012). Managers have the unfortunate absurdity of controlling resource, standards, and systems. Managers ensure that everything is in order and works to plan. Based on the theories of Leadership, dictating by the use of a tyrannical management style may not win the minds and hearts of people. It will create less good and more damage for the long term. Therefore, Leaders play a crucial role in motivating and leading teams to achieve the set objectives.
Key roles of managers in an organization
In any organization, a manager is responsible for performing the four core functions of management, which include; controlling, organizing, planning, and leading. Some of the duties of leaders might be common with those of managers, and some people may question if it would be right to presume that all managers are leaders (Langley et al., 2013). Hypothetically, all managers would be leaders if they efficiently perform the leadership responsibilities to encourage, motivate, communicate, and inspire employees to higher levels of productivity. Nevertheless, not all managers are leaders as not all managers can perform the items listed.
Key roles of leaders in an organization
Possibly the supreme distinction between leadership and management is that leaders do not necessarily hold a management position. Without a formal title, a person can become a leader. Any person is legible to be a leader because leadership is based on the personal attributes of the leader. A leader will show personal investment and passion in the success of their followers to reach their objectives that may be different from the goals of the organization (Langley et al., 2013). A leader is given power on a temporary basis dependent on the leader's ability to keep on motivating and inspiring followership. Leaders have followers while Managers have subordinates (Piccolo et al., 2012). Subordinates have no choice but to pay attention to the wishes and demands of their managers. On the other hand, following is a voluntary choice for the followers of a leader.
Important Personality Traits of a Leader
A leader should exhibit certain unique traits so that they become the best in their job. Openness is one of the attributes a good leader should exhibit. In the evaluation of personality, openness is one of the Big Five attributes, which psychologists utilize in evaluating people. Leaders should be open to new experiences, imagination, and insightfulness.
Decisiveness is another important trait of a leader as leaders make decisions. Leaders are regularly called upon to make decisions without fail. These choices influence both the people and the organization that they lead. Individuals require following an individual who weighs all the options before making decisions. The leader should display intrepid loyalty when doing the right things to the organization.
