Contingent work is also known as casual work. It refers to a non-permanent employment relationship. These jobs result in payment on a piecework basis; they have limited job security and are typically part-time with variable hours. The contingent workers always receive fewer benefits and less pay than full-time workers. Besides, they are less likely to be protected by labor and employment laws; this is according to the United States Department of Labor. When it comes to a career, contingent work is usually not considered part of a job let alone be deemed to be a career. The fact that contingent work always offers no opportunity or little opportunity for career development is a common feature of this kind of work. Consultants, freelancers, temporary contract workers, independent contractors or independent professionals are some of the terms that are often used to refer to Contingent workers; these are individuals are not full-time employees of the organization, therefore, are not on the company's payroll (Rouse, 2017).
Contingent work is not a social problem as used by some commentators. In most cases, classified advertising and employment agencies media use the term casual work to refer to contingent work. It is a way of attracting individuals who would not consider the work as part of a long-term career but would wish to earn some money. It is mainly used to target students who are on vacation. In essence, all contingent work is not casual work whereas all casual work is considered to be contingent work. Jobs that fall under contingent employment include; positions in organizations that have a high staff turnover or part-time jobs (Rouse, 2017).
