Midterm essay on Human resource management
Human resource management (HR or HRM), refers to all strategic approaches that are implemented by a company or organization to yield effective management of people to help the business gain a competitive advantage. HRM is designed and assigned the responsibility of maximizing performances and productivities of the employees concerning the outlined strategic objectives of their employers (Dessler, 2017). On the contrary, there is no unanimous or single definition of competitive advantage. However, through our lectures from lesson one through four, I can say that competitive advantage is uncodified conditions or circumstances that put organizations or companies in either favorable or superior positions in the business environment. In other words, a competitive advantage is that condition that can give an organization a competitive edge in the marketplace. Herein this paper will use subsections to extensively analyze how HRM plays a critical role of using the willpower and the workforce of their employees to achieve this competitive advantage over their competitors.
Part I: Managing employees for competitive advantage
From Gary Dessler’s Textbook Human Resource Management, we have learned that one of the most critical steps for organizations is incorporating human resources into their business. This is particularly so because human resources can ultimately help organization managers in an array of ways ranging from locating to hiring, training and maintaining a finely tuned and productive workforce. Available literature posits that when all these components are blended, they can provide a competitive advantage for any business or organization (Clulow, Gerstman & Barry, 2003). In this regard, therefore, managing employees for competitive advantage remains one of the best ways to bring the best out of the employees – which in return increases their productivity and radically increasing profit maximization for an organization. To some extent, it can be challenging for managers to grasp how can HR become a component of competitive advantage for an organization.
